NOTE BY JAMES VOS, MAYORAL COMMITTEE MEMBER FOR ECONOMIC OPPORTUNITIES AND ASSET MANAGEMENT.

I am pleased to confirm that the racial quotas originally proposed as qualifying criteria for SMMEs to access relief funding, have now been removed.

This is the result of sustained lobbying and pressure over the last week and shows that our efforts to engage with national government, on behalf of our residents, is bearing fruit.

Given the dire consequences these businesses face, the application of race as a means to qualify for assistance would have done more damage than good and should never have been contemplated as a means to qualify for relief from the national government during a state of disaster.

All SMMEs who meet the criteria should be encouraged to register on https://smmesa.gov.za/. The application form will be available from Thursday, 02 April 2020. In the meantime, I encourage applicants to get all the required documentation ready to be uploaded.
