The City’s Enterprise and Investment Department is making it easier for small, medium and micro enterprises to return to work safely.

This month Alderman James Vos, Mayoral Committee Member for Economic Opportunities, joined officials at distribution points across the city where local businesses received Covid-19 toolkits containing face masks, hand sanitiser, safety posters and information on relief funding and support opportunities.

“This is just great,” said Lauren Badenhorst of Photo Hire after collecting her toolkit this week.

“I’m so thankful. Many business owners can’t afford the masks and the hand santiser, so this is a fantastic initiative to get us started.”

Fils Iumbala, of Ashley Café in Rosebank, said: “I’m grateful that the City of Cape Town has made this possible. You are a lifesaver, truly. We have been struggling to get support, especially as a foreign small business owner from the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). I’m just very happy for this.”

Over the past week, the Invest Cape Town Team received several messages of gratitude and appreciation for the kits.

“Thank you, we have received our SMME Covid-19 Toolkit, for which we would like to express our sincere appreciation,” wrote Liesl Christensen of telecoms company, Effective Telecommunications.

Charlotte Bouw, of HON Sushi & Asian Restaurant, wrote: “Thank you very much, for helping our business to adhere with the rules and regulations.” She included the image below.

Said Alderman Vos: “SMMEs form the backbone of the city’s economy, making up the majority of service providers for goods and services needed for the optimal performance and functioning of the high growth sectors in Cape Town. The global COVID-19 pandemic has made its presence felt on South Africa’s small, medium and micro enterprises. For this reason, my team and I are staying committed to supporting SMMEs to combat the economic impact of COVID-19.”
