Tourism regulations uncertainty jeopardizes industry revival

STATEMENT ISSUED BY JAMES VOS, MAYORAL COMMITTEE MEMBER FOR ECONOMIC OPPORTUNITIES AND ASSET MANAGEMENT AT THE CITY OF CAPE TOWN.
The Presidency today deleted a social media post claiming that inter-provincial travel and accommodation for both leisure and business travel are allowed. The post was initially welcomed by the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Economic Opportunities Alderman James Vos, saying that he has made bespoke submissions to National Government to have these sectors opened up for economic activity.
“The uncertainty around whether or not intra-provincial travel and all types of accommodation is permitted according to recently published regulations is compromising the recovery of the tourism and related sectors and cannot continue,” says Alderman Vos. In response to this announcement being withdrawn, Alderman Vos confirmed that he will immediately petition Tourism Minister to intervene for urgent clarity on this matter.
“We need the tourism industry to open completely so that the various economic sectors can commence with business and to save jobs,” added Alderman Vos. He confirmed that he will continue to engage National Government to reopen tourism and related industry’s as these sectors are vital for the Cape Town economy.
“Together with our tourism partners, we will continue to work hard to ensure that Cape Town is open for business and that tourism will bounce back,” Alderman Vos added.
