The mobile-data-only network operator Rain has rolled out its 5G service in Cape Town. The Cape Town launch initially came after Rain activated Africa’s first 5G network last year in Gauteng, including Johannesburg and Pretoria. Its 5G service will be available in Cape Town from 18 July 2020, according to Rain.

“Rain 5G offers super-fast unlimited internet from as little as R699 per month,” it said. On the Cape Town launch, Rain explained that it would offer Standard and Premium Unlimited 5G packages, at R699 and R999 per month, respectively. The company said that both packages are available on a month-to-month basis and include a free-to-use 5G router.

According to Rain, the standard package caps speeds at 30Mbps which allows a single HD video stream, while its premium package offers multiple HD+ quality streams and has no speed limitations. The company emphasised that premium users could expect average speeds exceeding 200Mbps.

Analysts pointed out that when comparing Rain’s offerings to MTN and Vodacom, who are the bigger players with superior infrastructure, pricing would be the biggest bet for Rain in SA’s fledgling 5G race.

Rain’s Chief Marketing Officer, Khaya Dlanga commented, “By rolling out the most affordable 5G unlimited products in the market, Rain is playing its part in building the 5G ecosystem in the country.” He continued by saying, “Furthermore, Rain hopes to blanket more metro areas throughout South Africa in the next 18 months.”

“Rain’s 5G service can significantly increase ultra-broadband penetration in the country which supports economic growth and will enable South Africans to remain productive by working from home during the COVID-19 pandemic,” Dlanga concluded.
