STATEMENT BY THE MAYORAL COMMITTEE MEMBER FOR ECONOMIC OPPORTUNITIES AND ASSET MANAGEMENT, ALDERMAN JAMES VOS

I am greatly excited by the news that Pfizer and BioNTech have agreed to partner with the Cape Town-based Biovac Institute to manufacture Covid-19 vaccines as soon as next year. Once it is fully operational, the facility will be able to distribute 100 million doses to countries across Africa. Read more below:

This is welcome news as vaccinations across the continent lag behind Western nations.

The announcement is also an endorsement of the innovation that Cape Town has become renowned for and proof that the city is a continental leader when it comes to technology and manufacturing.

It also bolsters the case for the development of the Ndabeni-based Cape Town Health Technology Park – of which Biovac is a founding member – for which the Council approved the transfer of City-owned land. The Park is set to unlock major economic benefits by expanding the local manufacturing sector and creating thousands of jobs and technology opportunities.

We welcome Biovac as a member of the Health Technology Park Project, and the City’s Investment Facilitation Team stand ready to assist with an efficient expansion.

Cape Town truly is open for business!
