Corporates are Bringing the City of Cape Town Together

Although the implications of Covid-19 have yet to be fully determined, it is certain that it will continue to disrupt our lives for many weeks and months to come in the form of the South African lockdown. That being said, the corporate sector certainly can move the needle during this crisis by implementing strategies and initiatives that benefit society as a whole.

We think it’s important to highlight and share the positivity which has resulted from several businesses and initiatives that have been doing just that. Because, while historically corporations have taken a step back during times of crises, many enterprises are actually leading by example during the Corona pandemic.

Working for the Greater Good

One of the few real positives to blossom from this crisis is how creative enterprises have become in order to bring South Africans together (while being apart, of course). The below are just a few national and multinational entities that are working tirelessly for the greater good, in an attempt to make a massive social impact for all South Africans who are trying to keep their spirits up. It is encouraging to see businesses embrace corporate social innovation in this way and we are proud to showcase these efforts:

Discovery & Vodacom

These two corporations have partnered to deliver a simple but powerful online healthcare platform for the benefit of all South Africans during the COVID-19 pandemic. People are able to access free online testing anywhere they can find an internet connection.

Zapper

Zapper have added a new #saveyourfave donation feature for users to help small business development through this incredibly challenging time in Cape Town and South Africa as a whole. If you are in a position to help, tap on Zapper Nearby to find your favourite local merchants and tap donate to choose an amount to help them out with.

Defy

Defy, together with key stakeholder partners, is finalising a ventilator design that can be industrialised for mass production in South Africa in May. The initiative forms part of the National Ventilator Project (NVP), as the world battles to keep up with the global demand for ventilators.

Nedbank

Nedbank has committed to helping alleviate hunger and provide emergency relief to the most vulnerable South African communities. A R12 million donation, in aid of hunger relief efforts and to help mobilise, train and equip volunteers with the necessary information and hygiene products, is driving awareness across Cape Town and South Africa.

Sasol

As a producer and bulk supplier of a variety of specialty chemicals, Sasol has developed a new unique blend of alcohol-based chemicals to be used in the ongoing manufacturing of hand sanitisers. This is helping to address the increase in market demand for these products in South Africa and around the world.
