CiTi named as 2019 Laureates for the John P. McNulty Prize

The Cape Innovation and Technology Initiative (CiTi) and its chair Joshin Raghubar are 2019 Laureates of the John P. McNulty Prize. The Aspen Institute and the McNulty Foundation made the announcement yesterday.

The McNulty Prize recognises and celebrates the boldness and impact of individuals and their ventures who are using their entrepreneurial spirit and expertise to address the world’s toughest challenges.

Each year the winner is selected by an international jury that has included Mary Robinson, Bill Gates and Sir Richard Branson. The winner receives $100 000, and each laureate receives $25 000 for their organisation to further their venture. The Prize is given in partnership with the Aspen Institute and recognises exceptional leadership ventures undertaken by Fellows of the Aspen Global Leadership Network.

The City of Cape Town supports CiTi with funding to drive skills development in Cape Town’s tech industry.

CiTi and Joshin’s role in building and catalysing a vibrant and inclusive technology eco-system, through its clustering, incubation and skills development initiatives, have been recognised along with four other Laureates from each of India, The United States and two from Central America.

CiTi was selected from a high calibre global cohort of contenders and showed how Cape Town is one of Africa’s vibrant digital innovation ecosystems.

“Through my ALI/SA Fellowship, I became clearer on my personal mission, to be an entrepreneur for positive inclusive change. That change could only happen at the intersection of business, government and society. It became clear that this would happen through CiTi.” Says Joshin Raghubar, the Chairperson of CiTi.

CiTi is one of the four Laureates for the John P. McNulty Prize. The announcement affirms the outcome of the recent Endeavor Insights Report, which recognised the catalytic role CiTi plays in creating the most vibrant technology eco-system on the continent.

CiTi’s mission is to create a future-proof, inclusive society by using innovation and tech to positively transform South Africa’s present and protect our future.

The recent scale-up of CiTi’s digital skills initiatives ensures CiTi remains at the forefront of inclusive digital transformation in Africa. CiTi is forever expanding, adding campuses and launching specialised incubation hubs within our EdTech and BioTech clusters.
