The opulent way of life in this up-and-coming ‘lively area’ in the Mother City has leading independent real estate consultancy, Knight Frank enthused.

Optimistically, life after Covid-19 will be better than it was before the pandemic hit. Plenty of employees are enjoying the benefits of not being physically present at the workplace and are now ‘remote workers’. This movement has garnered the ability to uplift neighbourhoods and suburbs alike, and De Waterkant in the Mother City is experiencing that growth.

The district is being highly touted on Knight Frank’s coveted list of suburbs on the rise for 2021. De Waterkant was shortlisted with nearly 40 other global neighbourhoods in cities such as Dubai, Barcelona, and Berlin. Located near the City’s business hub, this suburb is filled with fine dining restaurants, charming boutiques and sophisticated, yet modern homes.

De Waterkant named in Top 40 most promising districts in the world

Well-liked by youthful workers and the LGBQTI+ community, De Waterkant has become renowned over recent years as property investors forecast this area will attract these sought-after ‘digital nomads’.

Kate Everett-Allen from Knight Frank elaborated, “The events of 2020 have shone a spotlight not just on how we interact with our homes, but also the neighbourhoods where they are located. The natural environment, connectivity – both in terms of technology and community – as well as privacy, are now more important than ever.”

“Using our local knowledge, Knight Frank’s global teams have handpicked those markets they believe are primed for growth in a post-pandemic world, and we’ve made a selection of 40 hotspots. New opportunities are emerging as the way we live, work, exercise, and interact changes. Travel restrictions mean that fewer people are now tethered to an office.”

The City planning to gain from the ‘Digital Nomad’ movement

The Premier of the Province Alan Winde sees this as an opportune moment for South Africa to adapt and welcome the modern traveller. As the Provincial Office plans to encourage the governing party to initiate a ‘Remote Working Visa’- that will grant remote workers access into South Africa, allowing them to take in the country at their own pace.

A lot of workers can now see the benefits of remote working because they’re more efficient in a space where everything is familiar to them and they feel comfortable. Through modern technology being powered by Wi-Fi and 5G connections that allow for efficient Zoom meetings, employees are now travelling across the globe and becoming wanderers. This is the ideal occasion for the Western Cape and Districts like De Waterkant to become the epicentre for modern commerce intellectuals.
