City funds programmes to train new generation for the technology sector

STATEMENT BY THE CITY’S MAYORAL COMMITTEE MEMBER FOR ECONOMIC OPPORTUNITIES AND ASSET MANAGEMENT, ALDERMAN JAMES VOS

The City of Cape Town funds two training programmes through one of its Special Business Partners (SBPs), the Cape Innovation & Technology Initiative (CiTi). Over the past three years, 1 726 people have been trained through City-funded programmes, facilitated by CiTi. Read more below:

I had the opportunity to visit the latest group graduates of the Systems Development Programme to wish them well in their future careers.  I am proud to say that not only does the City of Cape Town provide basic services, but we are a driving force behind essential skills training programmes, which aim to open the door to the opportunity of work placements and career development in the tech-ecosystem for the youth and unemployed.

The students who joined the new Information and Communications Technology (ICT) Enabler Programme will be taught skills in Front End Web Development, Search Engine Optimisation, coding in Java, JavaScript and Python and Cloud Architecture, alongside career critical skills such as communication, problem solving and work ready skills.

Cape Town is the tech-capital in Africa and this sector employs more than 40 000 people in Cape Town. Through the City’s Enterprise and Investment Department, we fund training programmes to ensure that companies have access to the skilled workforce they need to succeed and expand.

By funding and collaborating with our SBPs, like CiTi, we can ensure the skills pipelines are in place to grow business, our economy and ultimately, to facilitate the right conditions for job creation.
