PRESS RELEASES

Following success in targeting key European markets, the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Economic Growth, Alderman James Vos whose portfolio includes tourism, will this coming week launch a digital campaign featuring multimedia content to entice travellers in top US cities to visit and explore all Cape Town has to offer.  Read more below:

The campaign ran in November and December in London, Amsterdam, Brussels, Lisbon, Zurich, Munich, Frankfurt, Berlin, Rome and Paris and encouraged audiences there to consider Cape Town as their next destination for travel or remote working.

The campaign received more than 25 million views, exceeding its target by 3 million views.

‘This is one of the measures that we take to drive supply and demand from key source markets that leads to increased bookings. Passenger performance at the international terminal at Cape Town International Airport saw a record recovery of 96% in December, compared to December 2019, and 97% in January, compared to that month in 2019,’ said Alderman James Vos, the Economic Growth Mayoral Committee Member.

On the back of this success, the marketing initiative will now head to the key source markets in the US of New York, New Jersey, Washington D.C., Miami and Atlanta. There are direct flight routes between these cities and Cape Town as follows;  Delta Airlines from Atlanta (ATL) three times per week and a seasonal triangular route from Atlanta – Johannesburg – Cape Town – Atlanta four times per week.   United Airlines flies from Newark year round three times per week and from Washington D.C. year round three times per week. The City, which has a sister city agreement with Miami Dade County, is pushing for a direct flight to its main airport.

‘The Mother City is a place of endless adventure and experiences with something for nature-lovers, foodies, culture vultures, families, friends and solo travellers young and old.   We’re an incredible destination to Visit, Live in, Work from, Play, Study and Invest in and I’m on a mission to secure a tourism-related job in every household in Cape Town. With our campaigns driving awareness and creating demand for bookings, we can get there,’ said Alderman Vos.
