Cape Town SMMEs: Grow your business with Jobs Connect

The City of Cape Town’s Mayoral Committee Member for the Economic Opportunities and Asset Management, Alderman James Vos, is encouraging local businesses to sign up to the Jobs Connect work placement platform. See the video here:

The Jobs Connect initiative, funded by the City’s Enterprise and Investment Department, was launched in April this year and has already added 13 000  job seekers to the platform.

‘Jobs Connect has two distinct purposes: to link businesses, particularly SMMEs and corporates to the appropriate talent; and to provide knowledge, training and employment opportunities to job seekers across the City, particularly those who do not have the means to access such opportunities,’ said Alderman Vos.

Studies suggest that one of the biggest hindrances to small business growth – both locally and abroad – is a lack of skilled persons to staff the organisation.

‘In South Africa, the most sought-after skills include those within the IT, warehousing and logistics, administration, and manufacturing and assembly sectors. As such, job seekers will also be able to access courses that will make them ideal candidates for these sectors,’ said Alderman Vos.

Short courses that will be on offer include:

• Work readiness training
• Problem-solving
• Time management
• Team building
• Customer care
• Web design
• Project management

Longer courses will also be available and will include:

• Business management
• Business leadership
• Business studies
• Entrepreneurship studies
• Cloud practitioners

‘Small businesses are the backbone of employment and innovation in South Africa, so it’s imperative that we, as local government, provide whatever support structures we can. And therefore the City has invested in multiple programmes and initiatives such as Jobs Connect that will foster growth for Cape Town-based businesses,’ said Alderman Vos.

Aspiring and existing entrepreneurs can contact The Business Hub who help find solutions to queries including access to funding, tenders and cutting through red tape. There is also the Productivity Efficiency Programme, in partnership with Productivity SA, which assists small businesses in Cape Town (those who employ 15 to 50 workers) to improve productivity and efficiencies. The City also funds Special Business Partners in high-growth sectors who provide training to under-skilled people.
