Statement by Alderman James Vos, Mayoral Committee Member for Economic Opportunities and Asset Management at the City of Cape Town

It is wonderful news that Qatar Airways will introduce seven weekly flights to Cape Town from the beginning of March.

Connectivity forms part of the City’s Tourism Development Framework and with our continued funding of the Air Access Programme the objective is to connect Cape Town with key destinations around the world.

Connecting Cape Town to more cities and countries translates into bums on seats and boxes in the belly. This means that we can welcome more visitors, create more jobs through tourism and also provides trade opportunities to export more proudly Cape Town products to the rest of the world.

The key to bringing traveller confidence back again will be standardising safety and sanitation measures throughout the tourism and travel supply chain.

We have worked hard to ensure that Cape Town is safe for travellers and ready to welcome international visitors, because our leisure and business travellers from key source markets make the most of our favourable exchange rate and have a high spending potential which positively impacts our local economy.

The visitor economy is everyone’s business as it brings in much needed revenue to our city and supports thousands of jobs.
