STATEMENT BY THE CITY’S MAYORAL COMMITTEE MEMBER FOR ECONOMIC OPPORTUNITIES AND ASSET MANAGEMENT, ALDERMAN JAMES VOS

Today, I joined hundreds of residents and visitors on a clean-up of Table Mountain, organised by the Table Mountain Aerial Cable Way, in celebration of Take A Hike Day. To play its part in the protection of our country’s most iconic landmark, the Table Mountain Aerial Cable Car, offered a free trip down the mountain to all who participated in the clean-up. From my visit, I can confidently say that we are open for business and ready to welcome visitors safely.

Last week, Table Mountain was voted the best attraction in Africa at the World Travel Awards Africa. This is a great achievement and will certainly help raise awareness globally about why Cape Town is such an amazing place to visit.

Together with Cape Town Tourism, our official destination marketing organisation, we have strategies in place to ensure that we boost the visitor economy for the benefit of the many industries and jobs it supports.

The City is committed to diversifying our tourism landscape in Cape Town by promoting products and attractions throughout the city.

My mission is to push tourism to all corners of Cape Town.

Later this week, we will be officially launching our Pocket-Friendly Challenge, which aims to show locals and visitors alike that Cape Town is a destination for everyone, no matter what your budget.

One of the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic is that tourists will be more likely to travel domestically. That is why our plans and campaigns will target our domestic market and let people know that Cape Town is both a quality and affordable destination.

I also have a dedicated tourism development unit to look at destination development, so that we can expand economic participation through tourism because the visitor economy is everyone’s business.

With these plans in place combined with all the fantastic tourism products and attractions the Mother City has to offer, I know that we can and will bounce back.
