JUMA ART TOURS SUPPORTS AND UPLIFTS LOCAL COMMUNITY

Local tour business, Juma Art Tours goes beyond only offering tours and shares food parcels with local community.

Juma Art Tours is unlike any other tourism business, creating a positive and sustainable change in Cape Town through tours and community projects. Every tour experience or encounter connects visitors and locals through responsible and sustainable tourism.

By going on a Juma Art Tour, you not only learn about the awe-inspiring neighbourhoods in the Mother City, but you are helping support and uplift a local community. Each mural visited has brought the community together in some aspect. Whether it be the connection created from the art’s meaning or just the simple enjoyment of its beauty. Watch and see some inspiring street art:

Founder and owner, Juma Mkwela, said that he’s very passionate about people and loves creativity. “I love Cape Town because of its diversity and the people that make it diverse, Cape Town is everything that a visitor could dream of,” Mkwela said.

As we all know, the COVID-19 pandemic and lockdown had an immense impact on the tourism sector. However, during the pandemic, Juma Art Tours has showcased a positive and sustainable change in communities. Mkwela said that his tour business has shown what it truly stands for by giving the community support through handing out masks and food parcels.

When asked, Mkwela went on to highlight how the local community played a vital role in overcoming the challenges that COVID-19 has thrown towards his business by donations.

With health and safety still top of mind, Juma Art Tours has all the health and safety protocols in place for staff and customers, from taking temperatures, sanitising, wearing masks and keeping extra on-hand, as well as educating staff.

 Showcasing art and innovation

Juma Mkwela not only runs a tour business but also a bicycle shop called Khaltsha Cycles.

According to Mkwela, since March he has donated more than 300 food parcels through Khaltsha Cycles which so far has donated more than 200 bicycles to essential workers, school kids and small businesses. He added that they’ve also created four jobs during the pandemic.

In the future, Mkwela plans to expand his business by building accommodation for guests, building an art gallery and art studios.
