The Silo Hotel in Cape Town, South Africa, was voted No. 1 on Travel + Leisure’s 2020 list of best city hotels in Africa and No. 57 on the magazine’s list of top hotels in the world. “A magical hotel towering above the V&A Waterfront surrounded by the natural wonder of South Africa’s Mother City,” says the Business Insider.

According to The Royal Portfolio, the hotel was built in the grain elevator portion of the historic grain silo complex occupying six floors above the Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa (MOCAA) which houses Africa’s largest collection of contemporary African art. The Royal Portfolio also revealed that the grain silo was functional from 1924 through 2001 and played an important role in South Africa’s involvement in international trade.

Heatherwick Studio – the company chosen to lead the $40 million architectural redesign of the abandoned grain silo, implemented the high ceilings as a way to hold onto the structure’s identity, according to Business Insider.

“The hotel has 28 rooms, including a spectacular one-bedroom penthouse,” Business Insider explained. They continued by saying, “Each room has been individually designed and decorated by the stylish wand of Liz Biden.”

While travel remains paused for many people around the world, the Silo remains closed to guests, according to an advisory statement on The Royal Portfolio site. “However, travellers can plan their future trips through the hotel group’s bond program,” the Business Insider concluded.
